Panel types and what they suit

The panel decides the reading experience, the power budget and the bill of materials. We work with monochrome Carta for long-form reading and Kaleido for colour covers, note-taking and illustrated titles, and we sample each lot before it reaches the line.

  • Carta panels for text-first reading
  • Kaleido panels for colour content
  • 6 to 13.3 inch diagonal formats
  • Front light with adjustable colour temperature
  • Capacitive touch or stylus input
  • Panel lots sampled for contrast and ghosting

Hardware and software platforms

Android gives you an application ecosystem, a familiar update path and third-party reading apps. RTOS gives you lower standby current and a shorter boot. We build both, and the choice is made against reading time, cost and how much software you want to own.

  • Android platforms with your app layer
  • RTOS firmware for long battery life
  • Low-power standby and wake behaviour
  • Waveform and refresh tuning per panel
  • Boot logo, default apps and language packs
  • Update path agreed before design freeze

Manufacturing on our own Shenzhen line

Design and production sit in the same building in Bao'an, Shenzhen. Assembly, test and packing run under one roof across four flexible lines, which is why a change to a panel lot or a mould can be tested on the line in days rather than weeks.

  • 8,000 m² production area
  • Four flexible assembly lines
  • Around 60,000 units per month
  • Small-batch changeover for pilots
  • Assembly, test and packing in one building
  • ISO 9001:2015 quality management system

Quality checkpoints

A tablet that reads well on a desk can still fail in a bag. Thin devices are checked for structure as well as electronics: drop, torsion and pressure tests run on pre-production units, and failures are traced to a part or a process before the batch is released.

  • Incoming material inspection against specification
  • In-process test before the case is closed
  • End-of-line functional test on every unit
  • 72-hour refresh loop on batch samples
  • Drop, torsion and pressure tests on pilot units
  • Batch records tied to build date

What to send for a first quote

A short brief is enough to start. We reply with the questions that decide feasibility and cost: panel availability, platform choice, enclosure approach, certification markets and expected volume.

  • Screen size and reading use case
  • Colour or monochrome content
  • Target markets and certification needs
  • Enclosure: existing mould or new tooling
  • Expected first-year volume
  • Target retail price band

Questions buyers usually ask

What is the difference between an e-reader and an e-ink tablet?+

An e-reader is optimised for long-form reading with a simpler interface and a lower power budget. An e-ink tablet adds stylus input, note-taking apps and often a larger screen, which changes the panel, the touch stack and the thermal and structural design.

Can you manufacture a tablet designed by another team?+

Yes. We review the drawings, BOM and test plan for parts that are hard to source or likely to fail, report findings before the first build, and then quote a build-to-print run with incoming inspection and end-of-line testing.

How long does a pilot build take?+

A pilot build typically takes four to six weeks once design is frozen and parts are in house. It runs on the production line with the same fixtures used for volume, so yield data from the pilot is comparable to the later batches.

Which certifications can ship with the device?+

Finished devices are supported with CE and FCC test reports, RoHS and REACH material declarations, and UN38.3 transport reports for battery packs. The exact set depends on the destination market and is agreed at the quote stage.
